If a gate/door is open, clicking chop tree will route you to the tree as per normal. If all gates/doors are shut so that there is no routable path to the tree, you will route directly to it and cut through the wall, provided the tree is within 1 square still.

It applies to any loc (cyan dot on the map) that's on the opposite side of a wall and I've known about this since day one. It's a complicated one.

This was possible on the official servers, in some circumstances. There were rather famous ones where ladders were placed adjacent to a wall, when all doors were closed it was possible to go upstairs into the black void and walk around endlessly.

Probably it wasn't possible in as many cases as it is right now, but it's difficult to get the balance of the real behaviour right.
