Alder's Journal

Post by Alder »

Hey everyone! I've been having a lot of fun here and wanted to join the progress thread bandwagon. I created my account (4x, ironman) after seeing Logg's Halloween announcement. I put quite a bit of time into 2001scape and this game feels like a very cozy follow-up. I gotta say, I love the bank update :D

Carrying on with old habits, I started out my first few days doing some mining and smithing to unlock gold jewellery as a money maker. I completed Sheep Shearer to skip the early crafting levels and completed Doric's quest to unlock the anvil for some quick smithing loops to get to level 40.

... and then I got bit by the 4x exp multiplier bug and found myself stuck in the woods chopping logs for a week and a half. Coming from base early 2001 xp rates, having that boost really makes the game feel a lot more approachable.

So, with the now most unbalanced stat sheet in the world, I claimed 99 woodcutting and firemaking with Nerb there to congratulate me (thanks Nerb!) after a little over 18,000 logs. If you focus, it's around 570 logs/hr which ends up being 400k+ xp/hr around level 85, and steel hatchets stop failing at level 47. I re-watched The Fellowship of the Ring for the 98-99 grind which, as it turns out, was released in Dec 2001 - how fitting!

I also couldn't help but try to recreate a screenshot that I'm sure many of us have seen before :).
Coming up I plan to round out my stats more and take a stab at a low level dragon slayer run, but will probably get distracted with skilling again :D

Big grats on 99 wc and fm!

I can imagine other skills feeling slow for a while after those xp rates but a little questing spree might be nice way to reset so to speak.

Keep up the grind, looking great so far. :D

Congratulations! The leaderboards shows you have exactly same amount of exp in both skills. Just a coincidence or did you plan it out?

I watched all the 3 Lotr movies just recently, finished the last one two days ago. They look super good to me still even though being over 20 years old. Just like Skyrim does :P

Thanks! And yeah, I'm already noticing that lol, even fast-ish skills like cooking are noticeably slower. I think maybe ~4x slower than wc/fm. A lot of it is due to scaling. At level 99 logs give almost 800 xp.

Woodcutting xp scales exactly the same as firemaking so if you've cut and burned the same number, both skills will have equal xp. There were a few times I accidentally let woodcutting get ahead of firemaking and went to the logs spawn in Lumbridge castle to fix it. I believe the xp change to normal logs happened once Fletching was released. So I did plan it, but it really only makes sense to. It is kind of tempting to see what the xp rate would be like doing only woodcutting though.

Over the last week I've been rounding out my account a bit. I'm currently going for base 50s as a starting point and am nearly finished but wanted to provide an update:

I started off burying some big bones in the bone yard for an early 33 prayer (only a few hundred bones) then did restless ghost to deliver 37 prayer. Probably not worth doing without higher combat but I wanted to see what it was like and it's at least possible, just a bit annoying lol.

After 50 smithing I ended up with enough silver to reach 43 crafting. I decided to start training combat a bit and ~500 cows later I finished 50 crafting. They're pretty slow but it wasn't too bad. Happy to at least have the level for a ruby amulet now.

I played a bit today on mobile and finished off base 40 melee stats on guards and men. I also hopped around a bit and finished off a handful of quests. I plan to unlock the champions' guild soon for some rune gear before finishing off the remaining 50s. Nerb and I tried to do Shield of Arrav but it's not able to be finished by ironmen so I'm leaving that one on the table for now. But I'm also leaving Demon Slayer open so I can reclaim Silverlight in case it's useful against lesser and greater demons. I obviously abandoned a low level Dragon Slayer run because I think it'd be more fun on a non-ironman account. For now I'll see how long I can wait before the rune plate is too tempting dead

Wonderful update, I really enjoy the longer posts.

Congrats on 37 prayer, paralyze monster is a great tool to have for any potentially dangerous encounters. It's one of those milestones almost everyone shoots for and basically the slowest skill in the game so it's nice to get it done.

Well done on getting the level for ruby amulets, now you can die without the hassle of losing a valuable item and make as many as you like given the rng is willing to provide the gems. smug

Good luck with the rest of your questing, it's always a good feeling being able to get into the champions guild and grabbing some rune equipment along with what is arguably the most stylish cape.

I'm back after two weeks with a big update! I left off with a fuzzy goal of base 50s and champions' guild. I ended up knocking out a bunch of quests early on but decided to leave Knight's Sword until I was a bit higher in smithing to take advantage of the xp reward. I calculated that I'd need a bit over 68 smithing to have the quest xp take me to 70, so that's what I decided to go for. For that I planned to do 1k gold and 2k steel bars, but the Port Sarim dockworkers went on strike and shut down all non-essential travel to Karamja! I still needed another 400 gold ores so I had to make up the difference in iron and coal instead.

By the end of it all I claimed 55 crafting and 77 mining. The coal was by far the most annoying to mine since there's just so much of it - but what I didn't really consider was the time spent smelting it all. ~2000 steel bars took about 3 hours to smelt (plus an hour or two of inefficiency), so that's one place where superheating can help a lot since so much time is otherwise spent banking. I then claimed my quest completion and finally made it into the champions' guild where I bought a rune long, rune legs, and a rune chain body since I plan to save Dragon Slayer for a rainy day.

Next it was time to get my combat up a bit. I first went out to the cosmic rune spawn at the edge of the wilderness so I could enchant a ruby amulet, then went and got base 50 melee stats at darkwizards. After melee I took a weird detour and decided to camp the bone yard for 50 prayer. It took probably longer than it was worth but with the skeletons appropriately trapped (due more to their own behavior than anything) I was able to comfortably pick up two of the spawns for something like 12k xp/hr. Then to round out my stats, I burned through a few of my runes and arrows to claim 70 ranged and 60 magic for a final combat level of 65, which should help me avoid the hobgoblins at the edgeville mine.

Today I rounded off fishing and cooking to 60 as well just for a change of scenery. Along the way I also hit 900 total level and 30m total experience! For my next goals I plan to shoot for 70 crafting and see where I end up with mining and smithing. I plan to stick with those but will likely take some time to continue training fishing, cooking, and ranged which are a bit more laid back.

Hey that's me in the first screenshot! dance

Looks like you got base 50s and then some, nicely done, congrats on 900 total and 30m experience!

Kudos on getting the smithing done despite Karamja being closed off temporarily, that's some nice dedication. Fortunately it seeems to have paid off well with the gear upgrades, looking like a seasoned warrior now. Best of luck on the grind to 70 crafting, it's a big one compared to most other skills.

Keep it up!

Small update today: I've been working towards 70 crafting and hit 80 mining along the way! It's about 2k silver + 2k gold for 55->70 crafting, which I'm about halfway through. But after 80 mining I just had to stop and round off 60 crafting for a stats screenshot that may be the cleanest they'll ever be. I like rounding off in multiples of ten but it's rare that mining, smithing, and crafting align. Pretty silly but hey, it's a game about numbers lol
